What's on at ATSNZ Christchurch

We are very pleased to be able to host three educational presentations in the inaugural seminar programme in Christchurch. It's a comprehensive programme at this event so don’t miss these valuable learning opportunities with our very own Cubro Solution Specialist, Henry Bertulfo, and expert OT Jacelyn Goh of Linds Rehab.

Henry Bertulfo, Wheelchair and Seating Solution Specialist, Cubro

Henry is an experienced occupational therapist, specialising in wheelchair and seating assessment, and for the last five years has practiced as a product solution consultant/specialist focusing on wheeled mobility and seating products.

Quantifying Qualitative Assessment Data to Inform Wheelchair Seat Cushion Selection: A Clinician’s Perspective
Wednesday 20 November, 9:00am
Seminar Room 1

Abstract:

Wheelchair seating assessment is crucial in preventing pressure injuries and promoting proper posture among wheelchair users. This topic explores the significance of seat cushion selection, to promote pressure redistribution and pelvic alignment in achieving optimal seating outcomes. The utilisation of pressure mapping technology is emphasised as a valuable tool for quantifying postural assessment and identifying areas of high-pressure risk. By understanding the relationship between seat cushion properties, pelvic alignment, and pressure distribution, clinicians can make informed decisions regarding seating interventions. Highlights the importance of considering individual needs, such as body size, postural tendencies, and level of mobility, when selecting seat cushions. Emphasises the role of pressure mapping in evaluating the effectiveness of different seating strategies and identifying areas for improvement. By integrating these factors, clinicians can enhance seating comfort, improve sitting posture, minimise the risk of pressure injury, and ultimately improve the overall well-being of wheelchair users.

Jacelyn Goh, OT, Linds Rehab

Jacelyn, better known as Jace, is an occupational therapist with extensive experience and expertise in neurological rehabilitation. After graduating from La Trobe University in 2008, she began her career in Singapore, working in acute and rehabilitation settings. Over the years, she has gained valuable experience by working in various countries and healthcare systems.

Ten years ago, Jace moved to Melbourne, Australia, where she continued her career as an occupational therapist. During this time, she worked in both public and private settings and gained experience in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) sector, working with diverse client groups.

In 2021, Jace joined the team at Linds Rehabilitation where she holds the role of product representative and clinical educator. Her specific interest lies in complex wheelchair seating and prescription. In her current position, she provides consultation and conducts education sessions to assist other occupational therapists in their wheelchair prescription process.

With her extensive knowledge of Occupational Therapy and her focus on neurological rehabilitation, Jace plays a vital role in helping other therapists optimize their wheelchair prescription techniques and ensure clients receive the most suitable mobility outcomes.

Alternative Power controls - giving mobility to the masses
Wednesday 20 November, 11:45 am
Seminar Room 2
Abstract:
The ability to operate a power wheelchair not only fosters independence but also facilitates engagement in meaningful daily activities. However, individuals with significant physical limitations often find conventional joystick controls challenging to use, or even impossible, which results in them being dependent on others for all their mobility needs. Alternative drive controls allow the prescribing therapist the ability to give more wheelchair users freedom of mobility when a standard drive controller is inaccessible. But where do you start? And how to do know that the control provided is the best control for the longevity of that wheelchair prescription?

Alternative control methods, tailored to leverage the user's remaining physical capabilities, have long been recognized as invaluable. The most common alternative control methods include the use of switch controls, sip and puff, and head array systems. We review briefly the clinical considerations surrounding the prescription of alternative controls and explore the current limitations of these systems.

Let us introduce you to two innovative products recently introduced to the market, have been meticulously developed to elevate wheelchair control through alternative control and effectively address some of the limitations of current alternate control systems.

Unique power functions that create client centered solutions.

Wednesday 20 November, 11:45 am
Seminar Room 2
Abstract:
Often the difference between disability and ability is the application of assistive technology that matches the unique functional abilities of our clients. There have been many advances in technology for how individuals who use powered mobility can add on specialised seating functions and controls to enhance their participation in the world that surrounds them.

Join us to explore the clinical applications of powered lateral tilt, latitude (seat to floor), anterior tilt and standing functions; along with alternate drive control systems, that through clinical application, have vastly improved the quality of life for the unique individuals we will showcase through our clinical studies. We will explore the research available to assist in our decision making and ensure we use outcome measures that showcase client centered processes aren’t lost in a tick box society.
