Nikola Belich has had some nightmare experiences with wheelchairs since she had her leg amputated almost 20 years ago following a motorcycle accident.
She has suffered pain from ill-fitting components, was left stranded in the rain when a power unit failed, and broke her kneecap when she overbalanced and her wheelchair rolled on top of her.
But when she sat in the Alltrack M3-HD mid-wheel drive heavy duty power wheelchair for the first time, she “just knew” that this chair would be different.
“It just felt right. It was like putting on a pair of shoes and going ‘yeah, that’s the one’. Of all the chairs I’ve had, this would be the most comfortable.”
The Alltrack M3-HD mid-wheel drive heavy duty power wheelchair has patented dual-action suspension with vertical shock absorption and is designed for both indoor manoeuvrability and outdoor performance. It provides a smooth ride up to 10km per hour and offers a 50 degree tilt, 160 degree recline and seat elevation options.
Nikola can easily take herself around the former Kingseat Hospital grounds in Pukekohe, which has now been converted to residential accommodation, and across the road to the local dairy without needing any assistance. The wheelchair can navigate everyday obstacles and uneven surfaces – such as cobblestoned footpaths – and has been custom-fitted to meet Nikola’s needs.
“Henry from Cubro has been absolutely amazing and has catered for my every whim. I needed the seat shortened because I’m very short in the upper leg. I used to get a lot of pain in the back of my knees because I was rubbing on the edge of the chair, but Henry has fixed that with this wheelchair, which nobody else has been able to do.”
Nikola also uses a special bracket to hold the stump of her amputated leg level to prevent swelling and pain. Cubro has added a special cover to this bracket so when she’s not using it, the bracket doesn’t scrape behind her leg. “They’ve made things really easy for me.”
This is the fourth wheelchair Nikola has had over the years and she’s confident she’s now found the best option.
“The chair itself is just comfortable, it’s easy to manoeuvre and the computer on it is pretty self-explanatory. But I think the biggest thing is your backup support. When you’re in a chair, it’s very important to know that with a phone call you can have help there.”
Nikola says Cubro has been very responsive to any requests for help and has gone above and beyond to ensure everything is working as it should, with Henry personally visiting her at home several times to sort out teething issues.
